Bottle Houses: The Creative World of Grandma Prisbrey. By Melissa Eskridge Slaymaker, illustrated by Julie Paschkis. Henry Holt, 2004; $16.95. The story of self-taught folk artist Tressa “Grandma” Prisbrey's bottle village is told for children, illustrated in a delightful folk-art style. Slaymaker is a member of the Westside Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Tea Leaves. By Frederick Lipp, illustrated by Lester Coloma. Mondo, 2003; $15.95. Shanti, a girl from the mountains of Sri Lanka whose mother picks “two leaves and a bud, two leaves and a bud, all day long” for only a few rupees, wants to see the sea and becomes the first in her family to realize her dream. The Rev. Frederick Lipp, minister emeritus of the First Parish in Portland, Maine, is also the author of The Caged Birds of Phnom Penh.

Pocket Poems. Selected by Bobbi Katz, illustrated by Marylin Hafner. Dutton, 2004; $15.99. Great rhythm and rhyme, cute drawings, and a wonderful premise: “when we memorize poems they become part of us.” But some poems describe Mary having a little lamb and passing her plate for a little more; the old woman in a shoe is advised to fry her children with onions for lunch. Katz is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills in Kingston, New York.

My 7 Principles. UUA, 2004; 10 for $7. A colorful accordion-fold book for young children. Carol Holst and the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills in La Crescenta, California, developed this version of the UUA Principles.
