'Brokeback' lessons, rallying for rights, and more
Maybe it's because of Valentine's Day. Whatever the reason, many stories about UUs this week were about love--specifically same-sex relationships. Topics included a minister's thoughts on the message of Brokeback Mountain, the continuing struggle for marriage equality, and a photographic exhibit of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families.
To begin with, the Rev. Dr. Tony Larsen, minister of the Olympia Brown UU Church in Racine, Wisconsin, reflects on the lessons to be learned from the film Brokeback Mountain, primarily: To thy own self be true. "If we care about healthy relationships and lifelong marriages," he writes, "let us encourage people to be true to their nature and to enter only relationships that have a reasonable chance of success." (Journal Times Online - Racine, WI 2.11.06)
Also in Wisconsin, the Unitarian Universalist Church West in Brookfield hosted an exhibit of twenty photographs and stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parents and their families. Pictures featured everyday people in everyday situations--a family at the breakfast table, a child's birthday party--to illustrate the point that love, regardless of gender, is what makes a family. A short piece on The State.com announced the beginning of Marriage Equality Week, featuring events dedicated to rallying for same-sex marriage rights in South Carolina. (The State - Columbia, SC 2.13.06)
And the Scituate Mariner reports on the efforts of the First Parish UU Church in Massachusetts to become designated as a "Welcoming Congregation." The congregation is extending its efforts into the community by holding a series of educational workshops and discussion groups to officially affirm gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people within the church. The Rev. Richard Stower said this will allow people to explore their fears, questions, and personal attitudes, along with finding comfort within the church.
