Ceremony in Jerusalem honors American Unitarians
The recently much-covered story of Martha and the Rev. Waitstill Sharp, American Unitarians who traveled to Europe during World War II to help people escape from the Nazis, was big news again this week. On Tuesday a ceremony in Jerusalem honored the couple as they were posthumously named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority in Israel. They are only the second and third U.S. citizens to receive the honor. The event was covered in many publications. Here are a few of them:
"Boston couple honored for saving Jews" (AP/Washington Post - 6.13.06 registration required)
"Holocaust memorial bestows rare honor" (Boston Herald - 6.13.06)
"American couple to be honored as 'Righteous Gentiles'" and "US couple honored posthumously by Yad Vashem"
(Jerusalem Post - 6.11.06 and 6.12.06)
"Americans to be honored at Yad Vashem" (Ynetnews - 6.11.06)
"Yad Vashem adds two Americans to 'Righteous Gentile' roll call" (Arutz Sheva - 6.13.06)
See also uuworld.org's coverage of the ceremony, "Unitarian couple honored for World War II rescues" (6.16.06), and our longer profile of the Sharps, "Righteous among the nations" (5.15.06).
Sinkford talks about UUA's justice stances
An interview with UUA President William G. Sinkford was the lead story on the April 9 syndicated radio show "Interfaith Voices." You can hear the 15-minute segment, "The Unitarian Universalists: Facing the Issues and Facing the Future," online via RealPlayer. (Interfaith Radio - 6.9.06)
Minister makeovers
The Plain Dealer's style editor takes on the challenging world of female clergy fashion in a column about the Rev. Kathleen Rolenz of West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River, Ohio. Rolenz describes struggling to find a balance between thrift, self-expression, and professionalism. (Cleveland Plain Dealer - Cleveland, OH 6.14.06)
For them the bell tolls--finally
On June 3 members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Medford, Mass., celebrated the first ringing of their bell, an event the Rev. Hank Peirce said was "112 years and seven days" in the making. Though one of the church's most notable features has been its bell tower, it had not until this time had a bell. (Medford Transcript - Medford, MA 6.8.06)
