Gay pride parade draws support, ire from religious groups
Raining on the annual Southern Maine Pride Parade in Portland this year was the Christian Civic League of Maine, which opposes gay rights legislation in the state. A representative showed up to film the event and said they will be posting the film and a list of public officials who attended the parade on their website to expose the "immorality" that goes on there. Several area churches participated in the parade and considered the league's actions misguided. "The central message of Jesus, and really the whole Bible, is to love each other," said the Rev. Dr. Mykel Johnson of Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland. (Boston Globe - 6.18.06)
Surrounded by conservatives, liberal church thrives
The Rev. Dave Weissbard, self-proclaimed religious humanist and retiring minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Rockford, Ill., says conservatism is partially responsible for his congregation's prosperity over the years. The 430-member church is one of the pockets of theological liberalism in a town better known for its religious conservatism, a situation Weissbard can see some benefit from. In Rockford, he says, "if you’re liberal, you feel like you need some support. And so this church has been a haven for liberals in the community..." (Rockford Register Star - Rockford, IL 6.22.06)
Seminary student fasts for same-sex rights
Craig Nowak, a member of the Universalist Church of West Hartford, Ct., who is studying for the UU ministry, fasted to protest the Federal Marriage Amendment on June 7. Nowak was interviewed by a Hartford Courant columnist and two local radio shows where he discussed the fast, his faith, and same-sex rights. (Hartford courant - Hartford, CT 6.7.06)
