Famed UU composer dies at 83
Daniel Pinkham, a prominent American composer of choral and orchestral works including the seasonal favorite, "Christmas Cantata," served for 40 years as music director at King's Chapel, a Unitarian Universalist church in Boston. He died Monday at the age of 83. (Boston Globe - 12.19.06)
Program helps ex-foster kids transition to independence
Independent Living for Young Adults, a program at the First Unitarian Church in Sharpley, Del., has helped nearly 60 young people over the past two years who were in foster care until they turned 18 and are now out on their own. The group takes donations to help these ex-foster kids furnish their apartments, buy clothes, and pay rent if necessary. Group members also help them search for scholarships, fill out job applications, or simply listen when the kids need someone to talk to. (The News Journal - Wilmington, DE 12.18.06)
Salem church to auction storied silver work
The First Church in Salem, Mass., founded in 1629, is auctioning off 14 pieces from its historic 70-piece silver collection in hope of raising $1 million to accelerate membership and programming growth and make the building more accessible. Among the pieces to be auctioned are a cup given to the church by John Higginson, a Salem merchant who interviewed alleged witches and witnesses and recorded their confessions during the Salem witch trials of 1692, and a beaker made by Jeremiah Dummer, the first native-born American silversmith. Congregation bids its building goodbye
As they watched the blackened remains of their church building being razed, members of the UU Congregation at Rock Tavern, N.Y., remembered the good times and tried to look to the future. Since the church was destroyed by fire in September, the congregation has been holding Sunday services at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, but on February 1 they plan to launch an official fundraising campaign for a new building.
