A photographic history of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.
Courting Equality: A Documentary History of America’s First Legal Same-Sex Marriages. By Patricia A. Gozemba and Karen Kahn. Photos by Marilyn Humphries. Beacon Press, 2007; $34.95.
This beautiful coffeetable book tells the personal and political story of how same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts. The book is illustrated with more than 100 photographs taken by photojournalist (and UU World contributor) Marilyn Humphries for Boston’s Gay Community News and Bay Windows since 1982. (Above: Sue Hyde, an organizer for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and member of the MassEquality board, is all smiles as the Boston Globe greets the first day of marriage equality, May 17, 2004.) Unitarian Universalists, their congregations, and the UUA appear throughout.
