Take a bow, digital 'World'

Our partner publication on the Internet, the weekly uuworld.org, has yet to celebrate its first birthday—but already it has won its first award. If you’ve not yet sampled uuworld.org and signed up for its weekly email alert about news of Unitarian Universalism, let this recognition be the nudge you need.

The Web publication is closely related to the magazine you are holding, but it is not just an electronic version of it. It has its own spirit, as expressed by its full name: uuworld.org: liberal religion and life. While the print magazine circulates almost exclusively to members of UU congregations, uuworld.org is available to all who peruse the Internet. Its articles turn up in Internet search results and on blogs and who knows where else.

In short, uuworld.org broadcasts our liberal religion into the world of people who don’t know much about us. That’s what won it the Best Faith-Based Online Campaign award in the 2006 Internet Advertising Competition of the Web Marketing Association. Advertising? Not in the usual sense of the word, to be sure. But by exposing our liberal religion to the digital universe, uuworld.org “advertises” it to lots of people who don’t know about us. A respected Internet trade association recognized the value of this, and we are grateful for the appreciation.

So come check us out. The name and Web address are one and the same: uuworld.org.

With this issue we welcome Michelle Bates Deakin to our masthead as a contributing editor. The occasion coincides with her fourth feature for the UU World, a profile of Martha and Waitstill Sharp and their heroic efforts to save Jews and opponents of Nazism during World War II [see page 38]. Michelle has also written for uuworld.org and is the author of the new Skinner House book Gay Marriage, Real Life: Ten Stories of Love and Family. She is a member of First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Arlington, Massachusetts.

Also with this issue, one familiar name leaves our masthead, and two other UU World staffers gain new titles.

Kathy Todd, who started as the magazine’s ad coordinator almost four years ago and most recently served as production manager, left us to move to Seattle, where her husband has accepted a position with Microsoft. Kathy made many substantial contributions to UU publishing, perhaps most vividly as part of the three-person team who designed and launched uuworld.org.

Kenneth Sutton, managing editor of uuworld.org, also becomes managing editor of UU World. With several months’ experience producing both the print and Web magazines, the staff agreed that unifying their management made sense.

And Jane Greer, who had been the magazine’s managing editor, takes the title senior editor, extending a role she has long held: overseeing our coverage of Unitarian Universalism news. The weekly Web magazine has made her job much more demanding—and Jane has risen to the challenge, providing much more timely news for you.
