The Unitarian Universalist Church in Meriden, Connecticut, had recently decided to open its church as a sanctuary when minister the Rev. Jan Carlsson-Bull received a call informing her that Indonesian immigrant Sujitno Sajuti was in need of immediate protection from deportation. “The immediacy of Sujitno’s needs came to our attention yesterday, so we acted quickly,” said Carlsson-Bull. “It’s a gift to us that we are able and willing to offer sanctuary.” (My Record Journal – 10.11.17)

Tennessee congregation’s sustainability efforts make news

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Chattanooga, Tennessee, is in the spotlight as a leader in the community for sustainability efforts. As part of the process for achieving certification as a Green Sanctuary in 2014, the congregation raised $20,000 dollars for solar panels that are now on the roof. Congregation member Sandy Kurtz led the effort at that time, and as a founder of Tennessee Interfaith Power and Light she is encouraging other houses of worship to adopt sustainability measures as well.
