May This Light Shine: A Songbook for Children and Youth. Ed. by Wendy Bartel. Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network, 2006; singer’s edition, $8.

Thirty spirited contemporary songs for UU children, including many pieces for children’s choirs. Some are explicitly UU, like David Owens’s sprightly march “I Am a Unitarian, I Am a Universalist.” Lee Morris’s Easter anthem, “Everybody Sing Hallelujah,” fills a need for a UU children’s song about Jesus that celebrates his human moral legacy. Other songs celebrate nature, diverse families, and the joy of singing itself. Playfulness imbues the collection: Nick Page’s “UU Children’s Blessing,” for example, turns “This Little Piggy” into a goofy but sincere celebration of diverse beliefs. (“And this little piggy believes in multiple deities!”) Children’s drawings are sprinkled throughout. A director’s edition with accompaniment is available with bulk orders.
