In an editorial on July 18, 2016, the New York Times editorial board urged President Obama to shut down family detention centers that house refugee families and instead provide more support to families fleeing violence, especially in Central America. At General Assembly 2015 in Portland, Oregon, Unitarian Universalists passed an Action of Immediate Witness calling for the immediate closure of family detention centers.
