The Unitarian Universalist Association and other UU groups signed a January 3 interfaith statement condemning the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani of Iran by a U.S. drone strike in Iraq. “We renounce the escalation of violence,” said the statement, which was signed by the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Mennonite Church USA, Church of the Brethren, and peace and advocacy groups from many other traditions. After Iran fired missiles in retaliation at an Iraqi base where U.S. troops are stationed, UUA President Susan Frederick-Gray offered prayers for U.S. service personnel and their families deployed to or already serving in the Middle East and wrote, “My heart is also with the people of Iran and Iraq who have endured decades of violence, sanctions, instability, and upheaval.” (facebook.com/revsusanfrederickgray, January 10)
