A new editor for news

There are new faces at UU World.

With this issue, we say farewell to one of our most prolific contributors and welcome another to the staff.

As we were sending the Spring issue to the printer, my colleague Jane Greer announced that she was leaving the magazine staff after ten years to take a new position in UUA President Peter Morales’s office. Jane joined the magazine not long after I did. She started as the editorial assistant. She had a passion to write, however, and soon began contributing news stories to what was, back then, a ten-page bimonthly news section. In short order Jane became the section’s editor. For several years, she served as managing editor, setting out production schedules while shepherding the news process. When we launched uuworld.org, our weekly online magazine, in 2005, she took responsibility for editing or writing several stories a week, along with a variety of features and departments for the print edition. For the past five years she served as senior editor, focused on writing and editing the news, which she did with grace, clarity, and persistence. We’re glad she’s still in the building, even as we miss her in the office.

Jane’s successor is no stranger to the magazine. Senior editor Michelle Bates Deakin has been writing for UU World since 2004 and has been a contributing editor for several years, writing cover articles about addictions ministry and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and dozens of news stories. Michelle is also the author of a wonderful book, Gay Marriage, Real Life: 10 Stories of Love and Family, which Skinner House Books published in 2006, and has completed another about ordinary Unitarian Universalists doing extraordinary social justice work, which will be published by Skinner House this fall. She is an active member and lay leader at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Arlington, Massachusetts. She took the reins of our news section in March.

We also welcome Christian Schmidt as our new part-time production specialist. A native Texan, Christian is a UU seminarian at Andover Newton Theological School. He replaces Joshua De Gregorio, who held the same position from 2006 to 2010 and who was a delight to work with.
