New UUA Common Read choices focus on indigenous peoples’ experience

The UUA Common Read Selection Committee has announced two versions of the same title as its choice for the 2019–20 Common Read: An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz (Beacon Press, 2015) and An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States for Young People adapted by Jean Mendoza and Debbie Reese (Beacon Press, 2019).

The books challenge readers to learn U.S. history through a narrative that centers the story, experiences, and perspectives of indigenous peoples.

The Common Read program invites participants to read and discuss the same book in a given period of time to nurture community through shared experience and meaningful conversation.

Discounts are available on orders of ten or more copies from the UUA’s bookstore, inSpirit, at uuabookstore.org.A discussion guide will be available at uua.org/commonread in mid-October 2019, and will work for readers of either version.
