This morning, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Board of Trustees discussed the administration’s monitoring report related to its policy on UU identity in professional ranks. The policy states that the administration “shall not jeopardize the formation of Unitarian Universalist identity within our professional ranks.” Through a Memo of Understanding with the two UU-identity schools, the UUA’s Panel on Theological Education provides $200,000 a year each to Starr King School for the Ministry and Meadville Lombard Theological School.

After discussion that referenced the controversy at Starr King, the board voted unanimously to accept the monitoring report as submitted by staff.

The board agreed that going forward, it wants to receive audited financial statements from both schools as part of their annual reports to the UUA, rather than reviewing only the school’s annual budgets.

The Rev. Sarah Stewart, chair of the Finance Committee, asked UUA Moderator Jim Key to make it clear that the board’s approval of the monitoring report was a very narrow decision and was not a broad “moral or philosophical statement.” Key agreed. Key and a number of trustees expressed sadness over the Starr King situation.
