When UUs convene this June in Baltimore, Maryland, for General Assembly 2025, Local Area Coordinator Valerie Hsu wants them to love her vibrant city as much as she does. That’s a big reason she was selected for the volunteer position for this year’s multiplatform GA, set for June 18–22 both online and in person.

“So often when people go to a conference, they get home and feel that all they’ve seen is the inside of a convention center,” says LaTonya Richardson, GA and Conference Services director. “The local GA team adds local touches and flair that gives that GA the stamp of the place, so people will go home thinking: I went to the Baltimore GA.”

From award-winning restaurants to renowned museums, including the Smithsonian-affiliated Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture, Baltimore has much to offer. Steeped in history—including Unitarian Universalist—it is home to 279 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own culture and vibe.

Hsu, a proud Baltimore resident and executive director at the UU Congregation of Columbia, Maryland, is working with the UUA’s GACS office to put a local stamp on the event.

Among other things, the local coordinator recruits area UUs to be volunteers, helps identify local vendors and services, works with the UUA’s Organizing Strategy Team to identify a recipient of the Sunday Service offering, and helps identify potential local partners in planning a public witness event.
